  1. INTRODUCTION

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Education was established in the year 1965. Since its inception the department has been engaged in conducting content updating and pedagogical training programmes for the faculty of technical institutions of India and abroad. The Department is also engaged in conducting research in Civil and Environmental Engineering and pedagogical areas, curriculum design, learning resources development for Civil and Environmental Engineering and allied disciplines, development of laboratory manuals, item bank, community development through polytechnic, integrating persons with disabilities in the main stream of technical and vocational education, etc. The department is also carrying out testing and consultancy works in the field of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Two PG Programmes in Construction Technology and Management and Structural Engineering discipline started from 2011-12 and 2012-13 respectively. The department has state of art infrastructure.

  1. VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Education shall proactively strive to become an excellent academic leader, change agent and a contributor in catering to the developmental and HRD needs of Technical Education System, Civil and Environmental Engineering Industries, and allied service sectors keeping in tune with the vision of the Institute.

  • Provide academic leadership in the area of Civil and Environmental Engineering Education, Training, Research and Development for improvements and innovations in Technical Education System.
  • Constantly expanding the horizons of the department to reflect changing technologies.
  • Conduct education and training programmes in contact, distance, online and blended mode.
  • Contribute and promote improvements in Technical Education System through project-based interventions.
  • Actively collaborate with industry, national and international organizations, field agencies and community for training, research and development.
  • Develop and disseminate learning resources, print and non-print materials.
  • Develop outcome based curricula incorporating latest trends in technology.
  • Contribute toward national mission and schemes of Govt. of India.
  1. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Education are:

  • Act as a centre for offering need based quality training programmes for teachers of civil and allied engineering, covering the polytechnics, engineering colleges, at regional and national levels.
  • Offer long-term programmes including degree awarding programmes at Graduate, Post Graduate, Ph.D. level in Civil and allied engineering discipline.
  • Arrange practical training for Civil and allied engineering teachers in industries on a cooperative education plan.
  • Undertake systemic research to provide research inputs for development of technical education training systems and its management.
  • Undertake action research for development of innovative methods, processes and practices for improvement of teaching learning environment in technical and vocational education institutions.
  • Design new instructional system and strategies for production of multimedia learning materials in Civil and allied engineering and Engineering Education.
  • Develop and disseminate learning resources like Textbooks, Laboratory Manuals, Video Programmesand Computer Assisted Instructional Multimedia Packages to technical and vocational institutions and other organisations.
  • Offer programmes for technical and vocational teachers in distance/ on-line/ MOOC learning mode using state of the art technologies.
  • Offer courses/programmes for technical and vocational teachers to suit overseas demand especially SAARC& ASEAN countries through ITEC programmes etc.
  • Collaborate with Community and Industry in organising Continuing and Non formal vocational education programmes and providing extension and consultancy services.
  • Undertake Consultancy and Extension Work for industry, technical institutions/organizations.
  • Facilitate national missions and schemes of Govt. of India.
  • Cooperate with educational or other institutions in any part of the world having objects wholly or partly similar to those of the Institute by exchange of teachers and scholars and generally in such manner as may be conducive to their common objects.
  • Create infrastructure and resources to achieve the objectives of the department.

Civil and Environmental Engineering is considered to be the most versatile branch among all the engineering branches.Core strength of the department is listed below:

9.2      TRAINING - INTERNATIONAL

       The department has been conducting international trainingprogrammes.Total five programmes have been conducted as per the following details:

  • Technical Cooperation Scheme of Colombo Plan (TCS)– 03 Programmes
  • In country Programme of CPSC,Manila– 02 Programmes

9.3      LONG TERM PROGRAMMES

 

       Apart from short term national & international training programmes,department has started two self-supporting PG programmes in Construction Technology and Management and Structural Engineering in the year 2011-12 and 2012-13 respectively. The total number of student graduated is:

9.4      CURRICULA DEVELOPED

Department since its inception has been contributing in different Curriculum Development Projects of the Institute. Notably amongst them are MP Curriculum  Revision Project (1970 onwards), Curriculum  Revision Projects under Tech.Ed.I& II (1989 onwards), Curriculum Development Project for Gujarat Distance Education Project (1990 onwards), Curriculum Development Project for Nagaland & Arunachal Pradesh(2005 onwards), Curriculum Development Projects for Technical Education Board for  Gujarat(2010 onwards),Maharashtra &Chhattisgarh States(2014 onwards). Department has also developed curricula for vocational courses for various clients.

9.5      PEDAGOGY RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS

Department has contributed in more than 30 PedagogicalResearch Studies under World Bank Assisted Projects, viz., Tech.Ed.I, II & III. This includes Space and Equipment Utilizations Study, Impact Studies of Various Dimensions of World Bank Assisted Projects, Impact Studies of Training Programmes. Department has also produced five Ph.D. in Pedagogical area. Department has also been contributed in editorial board and publishing of Institute’s Journal of Science, Engineering and Management Education.

Following are the on-going research studies undertaken by the department:

  • A comparative study on Accreditation criteria and process of selected Washington accord signatory countries.
  • A study on the effectiveness of community development through polytechnics scheme.
  • Impact of accreditation on performance of the faculty and student in the engineering colleges.
  • Impact study of adapted assessment schemes and credits on the performance of engineering graduates of progammes offered in premium institutions in India.

 

 

9.6      LEARNING RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT (PRINT & NON-PRINT)

  • Video Programmes: Department has produced a series of Video Programmes (30 Numbers)on Soil Engineering Laboratory Experiments based on IS Codes, on NBA Accreditation, survey equipment andon-going Construction Projects in and around Bhopal.
  • MOOCs:Department has contributed in MOOCs Programme(03 numbers) prepared and developed by the Institute.Total 95 numbers of videos were developed for 03 MOOC programme.
  • In the past department has also produced large number of transparencies, slides and Models.
  • Department has also been contributing in various Learning Resources Projects for Various Industries and Field Agencies such as Cement Industries,ETI of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka,Forest Department of Various State Governments, NIGUM, UADD, Police Housing Board etc.
  • Department has also been producing laboratories manuals, item banks, work-books, monographs, self-learning modules (REC project, Gujarat Distance Education project) for various clients.

9.8      CONSULTANCY PROJECTS FOR ACADEMIA/INDUSTRIES/FIELD AGENCIES

Department has contributed in conducting various projects  for NPIU,SPIU,SPFU, Cement Industries, ETI of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Forest Department of Various State Governments, NIGAM, UADD, Police Housing Board etc.

       Total 13 consultancy projects were undertaken in the last 10 years and the details are given below:

  1. Identification of training needs of engineers of Nagar Palika and Nagar Nigam.

9.9      EXTENSION SERVICES

Department has been involved in Extension Activities through CDTP&PwD Scheme of Government of India.It has also participated in various Components of Sub-Mission of Polytechnics. Department has also been involved in conducting equipment vetting workshops for various polytechnic institutions. Departmental faculty has also been nominated as chairman and expert for NBA accreditation, performance auditor and mentor for NPIU and SPFUs, expert for AICTE, short term consultant for the World Bank, examiner for various universities, etc. 

9.10   DISTANCE LEARNING MODE

Department has contributed in developing Curriculum Scheme and Learning Resources for Diploma Programmein Civil and Environmental Engineering Conducted by the Continuing Education Centres (CEC)of Gujarat. Departmental faculty has also offered three number of MOOCs programmes through SWAYAM. Departmental faculty has developed modules and learning resources for ISTD-CEP, UK-British Council-REC project, etc.

9.11    COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:

       Skill Development Training Programmeswereconducted under Scheme of Community Development through Polytechnics. Total3,52,144 Numbers of trainees were trained in Skill Development Training Programmes conducted through polytechnics of western region of India from 2009-10 to 2019-20.
