  1. INTRODUCTION

The department of Computer Science Education is one of the core engineering education department of the institute. It came into existence in early 1980’s as a Computing Centre, which was setup under the Multilaterally funded UNDP project, and had distinction of having state of the art computing infrastructure, which not only served the purpose of the project but also introduced computing courses in the technical institutions in western region of the country. During the same period interaction with industry was initiated when transformer design division of BHEL, Bhopal got involved in development of engineering designs and drafting with the help of the department. The innovative approaches which were initiated at the time of inception still continue to evolve in newer forms, magnitude and dimensions with even greater thrust and vigour. 

            Major activities of the Department:

  • Conducting short term training programmes for the faculty and staff of Engineering colleges and Polytechnics.
  • Conducting need based customized training programmes for Industry and Field agencies.
  • Involvement in various World Bank Assisted Projects on strengthening Technical Education system of the country.
  • Involvement in Master Programme (M.Tech. in Computer Technology & Applications)
  • Involvement in course work of Ph.D. programme in Computer Science and Engineering & Applications.
  • Involvement in research, development and publishing research papers.
  • Developing software and MIS for Institute need.
  • Training of Internal Faculty and staff of the institute to use IT tools and Applications effectively.
  • Developing Curriculum for various universities and Technical Boards of states
  • Developing Instructional and Learning resources.

 Department objectives are to:

  • Offer demand based short term training courses to faculty of engineering institutions and international participants in contact, blended and online modes
  • Design long term programmes using innovative curriculum design approaches and active involvement of stakeholders
  • Offer Certificate, UG, PG programmes in Computer Science and Engineering in contact and blended mode
  • Design, develop and execute short and long term programmes involving industry, professionals, and other premier institutes
  • Undertake researches in pedagogy, technology in teaching-learning, and content areas of Computer Science & Engineering, and engineering educationlike learning data analytics using bigdata and AI
  • Develop variety of LRs, online courses and MOOCs based programmes
  • Undertake researches in implementation issues of LRs, methods & usage, innovation effectiveness and attitudinal studies
  • Adopt multidisciplinary approach to design, teaching-learning strategies, and problem solving related to pedagogy, technology and content courses keeping society connect in view

  1. FACILITIES

The existing physical and IT infrastructure of the department is adequate to serve the training functions and to some extent a regular programme of a small batch size. However, to start proposed UG, PG and Ph.D. programmes separate setup is suggested in this document elsewhere. The department has following well equipped laboratories with all necessary software:

  • Computer Centre is equipped with 2 no. RS3 rack servers and 2 no. RS2 rack servers. It is connected on Fiber optic cable backbone-based network, and is serving various Intranet based & web based applications and programmes. NPTEL Instructional Video programmes are also provided. The network is spread out campus-wide.
  • The Department has more than 100 latest configuration computer systems connected on LAN, and having access to Laser & inkjet printers, and scanners.
  • 24 hrs. Internet service with 100 Mbps speed through National Knowledge Network (NKN) project of Government of India, is provided.
  • State of art Classrooms equipped with computer systems which are connected to projectors, interactive white board, and interactive panels.

Further, the department is looking after the maintenance and administration of computer network,  that is spanning the entire campus including academic buildings, guest houses, student hostels and residences. This gigabit network infrastructure comprises of layer -3 and layer-2 high performance switches. This network is based on fiber optics backbone which is currently supporting about 600 nodes and has a capacity to support about 1200 nodes. All the computer systems can be used for data exchange, hardware resource sharing and for internet connectivity.  Journals subscribed through INDEST consortium are available throughout the campus-wide LAN. It also serves NPTEL video and web-based lessons on the network. The internet connectivity is available on 24X7 basis. Currently Internet facility is provided with 1000 Mbps speed through National Knowledge Network (NKN) project of Government of India. The Institute’s network management system and data centre are in computer centre.  These are kept alive round the clock.

The Department of Computer Science Education of NITTTR Bhopal, provides quality need‐based training in contemporary and emerging areas and development of demand driven and innovative instructional resources. The department designs and conducts online‐cum‐contact mode programmes and subject matter updating programmes related to various areas of Computer Science & Engineering. It also helps technical education institutions in developing curricula in new/emerging areas of Computer Science & Engineering for Under‐Graduate and Diploma Programmes.

 

 

9.1   TRAINING – NATIONAL

 

Being a teacher training institute, the department conducts short term training programmes for polytechnics and engineering college faculty on regular basis in Computer Science Education areas. These programmes are mix of content and pedagogy of teaching computer science. The department has been conducting 15 to 20 short term training courses per year. These courses are in addition to the other interdisciplinary courses like induction training programmes, project-based courses and workshops, and courses like quality assurance in technical education (accreditation, academic audit, etc.)

  • TRAINING - INTERNATIONAL

 

Training of overseas participants through TCS & ITEC Programmes of the Government of India is annually planned at institute level. The department has been regularly participating in this scheme. Three programmeshave been conducted in recent past under the TCS scheme. The title of these courses is Web based courseware development –PHP & MySQL. In each course about 10 to 15 number of participants were there. Efforts are on to increase the number through ITEC courses, as in the ITEC scheme participants from more than 100 countries become eligible to attend the course.

 

  • LONG TERM PROGRAMMES

 

The department started to offer M. Tech. - Computer Technology & Application programme, which was run between 2011-12 to 2016-17: 6 batches (Sanctioned Intake: 36).

 

Further, in another Masters in Technical Education Programme department offered computing related course in the past. The M. Tech-Ed. is an interdisciplinary Masters in Technical Education programme. The department also offered Ph.D. programme in the Technical Education.

 

In addition to the above programmes, the department has offered the CSE related courses in other national and international education programmes such as Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering which was sponsored by International Labor Organization and in which teachers from African countries participated. Similarly, the department has contributed in several other programmes like Diploma in Technical Teaching for Sri Lankan trainees, and other programmes jointly offered with Colombo Plan Staff College, Manila.

Systemic research and action research have been part and parcel of NITTTR’s functioning to introduce reforms and innovations in the technical education system since its inception. Some prominent reforms are given hereunder :

  • LEARNING RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT (PRINT AND NON-PRINT)

 

NITTTR, Bhopal has traditionally been developing and disseminating variety of learning resources in engineering and allied content. For this purpose, a full-fledged production grade video & film production studio setup is there in institute. With the emergence of e-content and MOOCs, sea change has taken place in design and development of Learning Resources.  Utilizing these facilities, the department faculty along with other faculty members of the institute have developed large number of e-content and video programmes on various topics.
